[en] It is stated that the preparation of the transplutonium metals through californium has been carried out by two methods:(I) the reduction of a halide with lithium (or barium) metal at elevated temperatures, removing the excess reductant and lithium halide by vacuum distillation; or (II) reducing the oxide with thorium or lanthanum metal and distilling and condensing the actinide metal. Each approach has advantages and disadvantages. In the present work, multimicrogram amounts of 249 Cf metal were prepared by the distillation technique, using La metal as the reductant and submilligram quantities of high-purity Cf 2 O 3. The resulting Cf metal deposits were analyzed by X-ray diffraction using standard powder methods, and the results of these studies are presented.(UK)
