Since GUIGNARD (1897) reported oii the meiosis In Magnolia the mode of cytokinesis has been discussed by various authors. Among them FARR (1918) gave a detailed description on this matter and maintained that the cytokinesis takes place by a process of furrowing. having some doubt on this point I have been studying the meiosis in the PMC ®f Magnolia for these last three years. Chromosome number hi lllagnolia was also studied by several authors. Not taking into consideration those numbers in earlier reports which are mostly uncertain, a polyploid series whose basic number is 19 is found among them. Magnolia purpurascens MAKINO (M. conspicua var. purpurascens MAXIM.) is a plant which was considered by MAKINO as a hybrid between Al. d enuclata DESR. and A1. lili flora DESR., his view being based on the external morphological characters of the plant. I have studied this plant cytologically and compared it with M. Soulangeana which is according to BAILEY an artificially raised hybrid between the presumed parents. In the present paper I shall eoncern myself chiefly with the polyploldy, and the question of the hybrid nature of M, purpurascens and also with some remarks on cytokinesis, the details of which are to be given in another place.
