ONE ef the strong points of Our Section in recent years has been that people have not been allowed to talk on any subjec [for more than ten minutes, Any talk can be tolerated provided it is short. The same is not true of lalks that last an hour. I hope that this new venture into length will not put at risk the popularity el the Section, because this is an important day in our history. I1 is the first occasion on which we pay homage by eponymous lecture to the memor~ of one of our most distinguished biologists, Professor Edward Joseph Conway. I feel very bonoured to be giving the l/fat of these.EJ Conway (Fig. 1) died less than ten years ago, yet so much has happened in the intervening years that, in some ways. tie seems to belong to another age. Though 1 knew him,] did not know him well. Like most of my contemporaries, I looked on him with some awe and felt rather excited when he attended meetings of the Academy. I would point him out to my junior colleagues as a man of great eminence but, sadly perhaps, not quite get around to introducing them to him. I hope that subsequent review lecturers who may have worked with Conway personally and have had more opportunity to Study his rslher complex character will give us a better understanding of Conway the man and the scientist. I am not in a position to do this but I think I should say something about h~ s llfe and achievements (Maizels, 1969) for the benefit of those in the audience for whom EJ Conway is just a distinguished name in Irish scientific [fie.
