METHODSNew Zealand white rabbits were selected for study with precise documentation of postnatal age. Animals ranged in age from I day to 6 months. Animals were weighed, crown-rump length measured, tendon and righting reflexes elicited, tone on passive movement of the extremities determined, and the ability to hop or crawl observed. Rabbits were anesthetized with open ether and a tracheostomy was performed. A polyethylene tube (Clay Adams Co., New York City) of appropriate size (PE-go in I-to 5-day-old animals; PE-200 in 6 to IO-day-old animals; and PE-320 in adults) was inserted through the urethra into the bladder (22). The latter was performed after removal of the partially ossified pubic symphysis and partial division of the distal urethra. After insertion of the polyethylene tube into the bladder, the tube was secured by a distal silk l. igature around the urethra. The ligature was placed as distal as possible to avoid injury to the vascular and nerve supply to the bladder. The distal end of the polyethylene tubing was connected to a T-shaped cannula. To one arm of the cannula was connected the output of a variable-speed, constant-volume displacement pump (peristaltic pump, model 600-1200, Harvard Apparatus Co., Dover, Mass.). To the other arm of the T-shaped cannula was connected a strain gauge (model P23, Statham Instruments, Inc., Los Angeles, Calif.) and strain-gauge amplifier whose output was recorded on a variable-speed strip-chart recorder (Mosely Co., Pasadena, Calif.). Control cystometrograms were carried out under light ether anesthesia with slow, constant infusion (0.02 1-0.042 ml/min in the I-to s-day-old animals) of warm saline (0.9% NaCl) solution in the prone position. Differences between volume pumped into the bladder and amount drained from the bladder at the end of a cystometrogram were attributed to renal filtration. Filling procedures were terminated after a high-amplitude(10-40 cm water) detrusor reflex response was elicited. Laminectomy and transection of the spinal cord at the cervico-
