This article discusses the impact of environmental stress on crop plants during their reproductive stage. While previous research has focused on stress responses in vegetative tissues, the reproductive stage is actually the most sensitive phase for crops and directly affects productivity. The article emphasizes the need to identify target traits and understand the physiological and molecular responses of reproductive tissues to environmental stresses in order to improve grain yield and global food security. Several review articles and research papers in this Special Issue provide insights into plant reproductive stage stress tolerance, disease tolerance, the impact of abiotic stresses on mungbean, the effects of heat stress on sorghum, the potential of genetic variation in wheat for drought and heat stress tolerance, and the genomic resources for rice salt tolerance. The information presented in this Special Issue is valuable for plant breeding strategies aimed at developing stress-tolerant crop cultivars.[Extracted from the article]Copyright of Food & Energy Security is the property of Wiley-Blackwell and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder's express written permission.
