Brittle crack arrestability of structural steels is essentially important for the integrity of large structures to prevent fatal accidents. EH-grade shipbuilding steels have been expected to have the long crack arrestability of a brittle crack in a base plate and a welded joint. Several large-scale crack arrest tests have been carried out in order to investigate the long crack arrestability of heavy-thick ship building steels, where test plate thicknesses were larger than or equal to 65mm. High heat input welding was used for the welded joint. All base plates and their welded joints satisfied CVN toughness requirements for EH-gradc plates and welded joints in ship classification societies rules. A brittle crack ran along a welded joint and penetrated through the test plate under stress higher than 200MPa even though the longitudinal stiffeners across the test weld existed. On the other hand, a brittle crack along the welded joint arrested only when a test plate with longitudinal stiffeners was loaded under stress lower than 200MPa. In addition, a brittle crack in a base plate model with longitudinal stiffeners was not arrested under stress higher than 200MPa. These results suggest that EH-grade steel plates and their welded joints do not always have long crack arrestability. Further investigation will be needed to clarify the long crack arrestability of heavy thick steel.
