ALMOST ALL HISTORIANS are teachers. We may teach in different venues, such as museums, historic sites, classrooms, government agencies, or courtrooms. We may use different methods; but with few exceptions, most of us are teachers. Because my focus will be on the things that we share as professional historians, I want to begin with a story about teaching. Like many historians who work at universities, one of my responsibilities is to teach the U.S. survey. It is an assignment that I enjoy--one in which both the challenges and the rewards can be legion. Whether we teach in a classroom or in the public arena, one of the frustrations that we face is the gap between cause and effect. Often we never know what impact, if any, we have had on those whom we teach. Every once in a while, however, we actually get to see the lights go on, and it is one of those instances that I would like to relate to you.
