The authors demonstrate a continuous-wave subterahertz imaging system using a fiber-coupled multimode laser diode (MLD) and photoconductive antennas. The terahertz wave generation is based on photomixing between simultaneously oscillating longitudinal modes of the MLD. The system is compact and inexpensive since a fiber-coupled MLD is used as a light source. By using the nearly monochromatic property of the generated terahertz wave, both amplitude and phase information at a specific frequency are obtained by measuring the signal at appropriate two points on the delay line.
