WIAS was founded in 1992 out of the former mathematical institute of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. The institute is a Leibniz-Institute, i.e. one of the 82 German research institutes organized in the so-called Research Society Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. WIAS is financed in equal parts by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF) and the Federal State of Berlin. Its location is in the vicinity of the Gendarmenmarkt in the very center of Berlin.
