Sumwry A study has been made of the reactions of purified carbon with staam at pressures up to 50 atm and in the temperature range 750-830 OC. The effect of hydrogen has been examined by adding hydrogen in varying proportions to the steam supplied to the reactor bed.At high steam and hydrogen pressures and low temperatures a considerable proportion of the carbon is gasified as methane. A mechanism has been proposed whereby methane is formed by the direct attack of steam on a carbon atom already having at least two hydrogen atoms attached. The formation of methane is accompanied by the production of adsorbed oxygen which is liberated as carbon monoxide
