Memory for a word list depends upon wholist properties that emerge when it is organized in a manner congruent with semantic knowledge. Subjects [human] recalled 84 words exemplifying 8 routine activities (scripts) such as attending a lecture. In exp (experiment) 1, recall was far superior and more organized when the words were presented organized into scripted activities within the day than when presented in random order. In exp 2, recognition memory for the organized list exceeded that for the randomized list. False positive recognitions were highest to script-related lures for the organized list but were highest to word-associate lures for the randomized list. The organization of words to be learned determines emergent memory structures which affect recall and recognition performances.
