F railty is a major concern in the aged population and is related to increased risk for falls, hospitalization, and mortality. For example, frailty has been reported to be a predictor of clinical outcomes following surgery and in patients with cardiovascular disease (1–3). Despite the awareness that frailty is an important clinical parameter, a quantifiable scale for frailty has been difficult to establish. A proxy for frailty assessment that has been used is a combination of weight loss, low physical strength, decreased physical activity, and self-reported exhaustion (4). This scale needs further validation, and, additionally, there is a need for improved assessment of frailty in animal models to facilitate both research into the underlying causes of frailty and potential interventions (5). Work from the University of Minnesota described in this volume of the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences addresses this need by producing a quantifiable scale for frailty in mice based upon both physical and physiological parameters. This approach provides a potentially useful measure of frailty in animal models and can serve to help standardize frailty measurements in different experimental paradigms.
