The heat of reaction of dentine bonding agents alone and dentine bonding agents with dentine, hydroxyapatite and collagen were measured using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in the isothermal mode. The bonding agents were Scotchbond® and Panavia Ex® adhesives, and GC Fuji‐II glass ionomer cement. The heat of reaction for Scotchbond® and Panavin Ex® bonding adhesives were 44.3 and 6.9 mcal/mg, respectively. Furthermore, results support the view that the glass ionomer cements adhere to tooth structure by chemical bonding.
