Field experiences structured around a course in Language Arts can provide in- depth opportunities for preservice teachers to interact and learn from chil dren who are exploring language pro cesses. The field-based program de scribed by Hill integrates the current theoretical knowledge of how elemen tary school children develop oral and written language processes with the role of the teacher as researcher and reflec tive practitioner in understanding and planning for effective teaching.
