The effect of polymer molecular weight on the structure and function of ethylene—vinyl alcohol (EVA) copolymer membranes was investigated. Membranes were prepared from three different types of unfractionated and seven types of fractionated EVA samples. The composition and molecular weight of the EVA membranes were measured, along with the water flux, pore size, and tensile strength. The microstructure was observed with the aid of a scanning electron microscope. p]The water flux of the membranes was found to depend on the molecular weight rather than on the composition of the copolymer. Membranes prepared from high molecular weight EVA had small pores and exhibited low water fluxes, while those prepared from low molecular weight EVA also had small pores but exhibited higher water fluxes, due to a higher pore density. The mechanism of membrane formation and water permeation are discussed from the point of view of membrane microstructure.
