Discussion. Synovial fluid leukocytosis in a patient with posttraumatic monarthritis is an uncommon finding. Usually the synovial fluid white cell count in posttraumatic effusions is less than 1,000 cells/mm’with few PMN (1). Ropes and Bauer reported an average leukocyte count in hemorrhagic traumatic effusions of 1,540 cells/mm’(2). Recently, synovial fluid leukocytosis has been reported in 2 patients with traumatic effusions, one with a leukocyte count of 52,000 cells/mm’(89% PMN) and one with 29,000 cells/mm3 (74% PMN)(3). The synovial fluid in these patients was characterized by multiple intra-and extracellular fat droplets. It
