Over the last 20 years there has been height-ened awareness that highly trained young individuals participating in competitive sportingactivities may harbor underlying structural cardiovascular disease [1]. The fact that many suchathletes may have participated at exceptionally high levels of excellence for long periods of timewith severe cardiovascular malformations has intrigued investigators and the lay public [1]. Recog-nition that athletic field catastrophes may be due to a variety of detectable cardiovascular lesionshas also stimulated intense interest in preparticipation screening [2], as well as issues related tocriteria for disqualification and eligibility [3].
