It is widely accepted that birds must breed successfully in order to invade and to colonize a new habitat. Although avian eggs have traditionally received credit for their important role in producing the next generation of birds and in serving as the objects of adult incubation behavior, the role of structure and function of eggs in avian reproductive biology and in adaptation of birds to extreme environments has been largely ignored.
