Weight, caloric intake, sleep, B.M.R., temp., respiration, blood pressure, and blood glucose, inorganic P, lactic acid, sedimentation, hematocrit, and sp. gr. were studied on 21 addicts while still physically dependent on an opiate, for the first 15 days after abrupt withdrawal, and at monthly intervals to the 9th mo. of total abstinence. Recovery (as judged by a leveling-off of the values for these factors) varied from 1 wk. to 6 mos. Maximum physical recovery was reached when no significant gain in wt. occurred for 3 successive mos. of total abstinence. Comparison of the recovery with the addiction data indicated that adjustment of physical functions to morphine addiction, while biologically adequate, is not complete. Only the B.M.R. and blood sugar were the same during addiction and after recovery. The B.M.R. was subnormal.
