Three levels of mutual occurrence of plant species,[long dash]geographic, communal, and interspecific, are recognized. Two methods are used to ordinate plots, sampled in a Wisconsin savanna, along a compositional gradient. The species amplitudes interlock along this gradient in a smooth and continuous transition from forest to prairie. The measurement of interspecific association is suggested only for the quadrats of those plots which contain both species. Most species were found to be independently associated and interspecific attractions and repulsions were not related to the relative communal occurrence of species in plots.
