As a medical student, I was hesitant to explore orthopedic surgery due to my past experiences in the male-dominated dojo. Multiple physicians, including those I scribed for during my gap year, expressed how I lacked the physical strength and “daredevil” personality that defined male orthopedic surgeons. Their words hinted that there was no space for women in orthopedics, seemingly supported by the well-documented low proportion of female orthopedists. 1 With uncertainty, I signed up to be placed on a list of medical students interested in orthopedic research. A few weeks later, I received an email from a first-year orthopedic resident. When I met her, my first mentor, my perspective changed.She was a petite Asian American woman, like me, and the only woman in our orthopedic residency program. Most striking to me was her confidence that she rightfully belonged in orthopedics. As she introduced me to her specialty, I appreciated her mentorship. She was paving the way for me—mentorship, especially from those sharing similar racial, ethnic, or gender identities, is essential to breaking into a certain field. 2 As she tactfully confronted additional challenges compared to her male counterparts, I was inspired and prepared to do the same in my future specialty. Just as she served as a mentor for me, I am committed to supporting others who may also feel unwelcome in their spaces.
