Examined 36 patients hospitalized with acute or chronic painful illness and evaluated their affective state. 28 were clinically depressed, 13 were angry, and 4 were afraid or anxious. Four patients exhibited confusion and disgust. The findings were assessed in terms of location of the pain, affective state, acute or chronic suffering or no suffering, and central vs peripheral pain. Patients with chronic suffering exhibited significantly more depression and more anger. No significant correlations existed by the location or type of pain.(20 ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
