The concept of sustainability has been steadily increasing in salience and urgency in general societal discourses, as well as in the strategies of various public-and privatesector actors. Despite the prominence of this concept, however, understanding the meaning and requirements of sustainability continues to be a formidable task. This is not only due to possible technical difficulties involved in measuring sustainability, but even more fundamentally because the concept itself has proven to be highly contestable and elusive to precise definition. In response, a myriad of approaches has emerged for facilitating the creation of sustainability-relevant knowledge, and for assisting decision-making by translating the abstract concept of sustainability into more concrete goals and strategies. These approaches draw from the insights, concepts, and tools of a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines. In this context, the concept of sustainability assessment (hereafter SA) has been receiving increasing scientific attention (see Figure 1.1).However, literature on SA does not display a uniform understanding of its meaning and characteristics. Therefore, it is essential to begin by clarifying what SA is taken to mean in the context of this volume. Specifically, it is argued here that SA is best thought of as an umbrella term characterized by a set of aims and principles, and as such includes many possible methods and measurement tools that can be applied depending on the specific problems at hand. Despite this variety in the actual applications of SA, it is possible to detect a number of pertinent dimensions of SA, representing topics and questions that can be used in the design and analysis of SA processes.
