During a survey of the clinical features and liver microscopy of 250 patients who had undergone portal decompression for intra-hepatic portal hypertension, 23 were found to have primary biliary cirrhosis. 15 of these cases presented with portal hypertension and bleeding from œsophageal varices, whilst the remainder had presented with the typical features of cholestasis. Portal decompression in this atypical group prevented an early death from variceal hæmorrhage but did not influence progression of the disease.
