‘Why in tablet form and why before food?,’ ‘Why is this not a suitable drug–my patient has the same condition as yours?’ or ‘Why can't these be prescribed together?’ are questions you might have asked at one point. The answers fundamentally rely on an understanding of pharmacokinetics, or simply, what the body does to drugs. Appreciating the underlying principles of pharmacokinetics can be simple or complex (think equations, calculations and mathematical models). The first part of this two-part series focuses on the former with an aim to provide a basic, ‘no-frills’ overview of the main factors and considerations influencing the absorption and distribution of drugs and to help guide you towards answers for the ‘Whys’.
