Background The literature on silver-acetate deterrent therapy has been reviewed elsewhere (4), and only a few studies will be mentioned here. One of the most successful was the study by Malcolm and colleagues(6), who reported that subjects who used the 6 mg silver-acetate gum Tabmint six times per day for three weeks, the recommended regimen (7), had a smoking cessation rate of 1 1 percent, which was significantly higher than the rate of 4 percent for subjects in the placebo group. Quit rates were confirmed by measurement of blood car-boxyhemoglobmn levels. In Denmark, Jensen and associates (8) specifically addressed the issue of long-term smoking cessation. They followed 496 smokers for one year, measuring smoking status by expired-air carbon monoxide. Smokers were given one week to quit smoking on their own, after which the ex-smokers were assigned randomly to 1 2-week therapy with nicotine gum, 6 mg silver-acetate gum, or ordinary gum. Earlier studies by Jensen and colleagues(9) showed that the 6 mg silver-acetate gum (Tabmint) could be used safely six times per day for 1 2 weeks without risk ofargyrism. In addition to gum
