A kinetic study of hydrogen exchange in a series of substituted dialkylanilines indicates that the reaction is a typical electrophilic substitution and that the data conform to the Hammett substituent relationship. Thermo-dynamic parameters havebeen obtained which have been considered in relation to the steric inhibition of resonance in the dialkylaniline system.
