This article comments on the debate between Jacobson and Snyder in terms of the issues raised for the future of theory development and research. The issues addressed include (a) how we label and define interventions for research purposes,(b) the current status of behavior marital therapy, and (c) the need for a theory of marriage. A theory emphasizing affect regulation is proposed to explain the Snyder results, followed by recommendations for future research. These include (a) decreasing reliance on satisfaction as a sole outcome measure,(b) use of observational data to assess interaction,(c) use of longitudinal designs, and (d) a commitment to prevention.
