1. The integumental phosphatase in "dark" mutant and "wild" Ceratitis capitata strains hydrolyses only phosphotyrosine and beta-glycerophosphate during pupariation while in "white" mutant it hydrolyses all the substrates tested with a preference toward ATP and AMP.2. In the pupal, for all three strains tested, the best substrates are ATP and AMP.3. Electrophoretic and kinetic analysis suggested that the larval and pharate adult isoenzymes of integumental phosphatase are different enzyme entities.4. Phosphatase activity was also demonstrated in the integuments of three other dipterans and one lepidopteran during the transition of larvae to pupae and the best substrate was revealed to be also phosphotyrosine.
