The thermal addition of alienes, fluoroalkenes and ketenes to alkenes to give cyclobutanes has been extensively investigated in the last few years and is now one of the most important routes to cyclobutanes, some of which are useful as pre-cursors of alicyclic compounds. 3· 4 Tetracyanoethylene, a reactive dienophile in the Diels-Alder reaction, 5 has been observed to form cyclobutane derivatives with a few 1, 3-diene systemsto which Diels-Alder addition is difficult or impossible. 6 It has now been found that tetracyanoethylene readily forms 1, 1, 2, 2-tetracyanocyclobutanes (I) with a variety of electron-rich alkenes. 7 Tricyano-ethylene behaves similarly. As will be described in a subsequent paper, these polycyanocyclobutanes are good sources of 1, 1, 2-tricyanobutadienes and
