High-resolution sampling is important in reconstructing semiannual to annual faunal, geochemical, and sedimentological records in laminated, varved, or nonbioturbated sediments (e.g., Bfitt et al. 1992), especially in settings characterized by low (0.1-1 mm/yr) sedimentation rates. We have developed an inexpensive method to obtain high-resolution samples at millimeter thickness from a vertical section of a marine sediment box core. This technique is easily adapted to any laboratory environment. The sampling device can be constructed easily of common laboratory supplies and is simple to use. Sampling rates are fast: a 25-cm vertical subsection of a box core can be sampled in about three hours.
