An investigation of human language processing in the context of a program of cognitive science requires interdisciplinary research in linguistics and psychol ogy taking account of mental representation and process. In particular a lin guistic approach focuses on phonological, semantic and syntactic structures that are central to sentence processing in both production and perception. By con trast, a model of discourse distinguishes between the linguistic, conceptual and situative levels of representation (eg, Johnson-Laird 1983; van Dijk & Kintsch 1983; Kintsch 1988). The conceptual level treats text structures reflecting global and local aspects of meaning. The integration of textual content in a global interpretive context occurs at the situative level. On a point of method ology we should note that a discourse model provides a promising approach to the investigation of language processes if discourse is not understood as an ex ternal artifact (e-discourse), but as a reflection of internally encoded informa tion structures (i-discourse)(eg, Chomsky 1965, 1986). Various levels, which are distinguished from each other on the basis of specific rules and representa tions, are comparable to structural modules. From a psychological point of view these linguistic and conceptual structures are studied with regard to their properties of mental processing. The analysis limits itself not only to internal processes of the linguistic system but, in particular, to the interactive processes of the language system with other cognitive modules or systems. Psycholinguistic data supply evidence about the cognitive reality of mentally-encoded structures of organization, and this interdisciplinary methodology provides a foundation for modeling and simulating of cognitive and neurological proc-
