Dissolved-oxygen (DO) measurements from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division and the U.S. Geological Survey water-quality sampling program from 1966 to 2001 were analyzed using a harmonic curve-fitting procedure. Statistics for data from 31 stations, selected as representing mostly natural stream DO and temperature conditions, were used to compute a statewide stream DO model whose principal variables include latitude and elevation. Based on the 1966–2001 reference period, the model may be used to compute long-term, seasonal characteristics of DO in Georgia streams. Using the same 31 stations, a second model to compute long-term seasonal characteristics of DO in Georgia streams was derived using harmonic characteristics of stream temperatures. The model quantitatively links longterm stream temperatures to long-term stream DO as a cause-and-effect relation.
