Dr. Emanuel Papper was the founding chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University and held the position from 1951 to 1969. At the time of his appointment, the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University was only the fourth independent medical-school department of anesthesiology in the world. During his tenure, Dr. Papper built a strong reputation for research and training, with 38 of his students going on to lead the anesthesiology departments at universities across the United States and overseas. He strengthened his department’s clinical stature by setting up pediatric, obstetric, and neurosurgical anesthesiology subspecialty divisions. He was a founding member of the Columbia Presbyterian Health Sciences Advisory Council in 1989 and a principal consultant to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. He played a pivotal role in creating the Surgery, Anesthesiology and Trauma study section at NIH. He was a co-founder of Association of University of Anesthesiologists (AUA). In 1977, Dr. John Severinghaus became the first speaker for the endowed Papper Lecture, which was held without interruption each fall until 2019. The annual Papper lecture has become the highlight of the academic calendar in the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University. In 2018, the Papper Lecture became a semiannual event, with the addition of a second endowed Papper Lecture dedicated to pediatric anesthesiology and perioperative medicine to be held in each spring. Both the spring Pediatric Papper Lecture and the fall Papper Lecture were not held in 2020 because of the coronavirus desease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. As a replacement for these two Papper lectures, a more expansive Papper Event was held in 2021, with the topic theme of the event being COVID-19. This virtual event successfully invited many distinguished speakers and provided a venue for presentations by faculty members from Columbia University. Included among the invited guests were Dr. Howard Zucker, Commissioner of Health of New York State, Dr. Wellington Sun, a vaccinologist who worked on the mRNA vaccine at Moderna, and Dr. John Ioannidis from Stanford University who has written extensively about clinical research. Drs. George Mashour, Michael Gropper and Roberta Hines, 3 chairs of prominent Anesthesiology departments were participant contributors and discussants for the panel on “The Covid Pandemic and Academic Anesthesiology: Contributions and Challenges.” Dr. Eva Cheung in the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia University, who first reported multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children
