Six male dogs were observed in mating tests with receptive females and also in olfactory discrimination tests in which the stimulus material was urine collected from estrous and non-estrous females. Five of the males spent a significantly greater amt. of time investigating the estrous urine than the non-estrous. The 6th animal that gave no indication of discriminating one type of urine from the other was also the only dog that failed to mate when placed with a bitch in heat. It is tentatively suggested that free-living females in heat urinate more often during estrous and thus lay down odor trails which are followed by males and bring them into the presence of the female at the time that she is fertile and receptive.
