Each of the 15 chapters has been written by a specialist in that field who has used and often improved the technique discussed. The first seven chapters describe the main interferometers useful in optical testing. The next three examine tests that have a geometrical as well as a physical interpretation, such as the Foucault, Ronchi and Hartmann tests, including phase modulation tests (Zernike, Lyot, etc.) as a generalization of the physical theory of the Foucault test. Chapter 11 treats the well-known star test and chapters 12 and 13 go on to consider the two modern tools in optical testing, namely the holographic and fringe scanning techniques. Chapter 14 describes and explains compensators for the spherical aberration of systems like aspherical surfaces in order to obtain a null test, and chapter 15 covers the measurement of some parameters in optical systems, for example radii of curvature, focal lengths and angles. The notation used throughout the book has been made as uniform as possible. The mathematical formulae used are generally well explained, but any lengthy derivations available in the literature are not repeated. The four appendices provide further useful mathematical and optical background material. Each chapter ends with a good list of references which, together with the many clear explanatory diagrams and photographs, make this an excellent textbook for the student as well as an invaluable handbook for the technician.
