Abstract Rotenone tolerance of the marine calanoid copepod Acartia clausi was tested experimentally at 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.50, and 1.00 ppm rotenone at 9.5° C. Adult males had significantly lower tolerance to rotenone than copepodids and adult females. Fifty percent mortality occurred at 0.05 ppm after 16, 18, and 4 hours, for copepodids, females and males, respectively. At 0.50 ppm, total mortality of all stages occurred within two hours. Marine and limnetic copepods seem to have similar rotenone tolerance. Marine copepod populations will be drastically reduced in marine ponds or lagoons during rotenone treatments.
