Nahi Alon and Haim Omer claim that narratives in therapy and in popular beliefs illuminate the historical-cultural sources of influence on current ideologies and practices. Master narratives, which have evolved through the ages, influence all our thoughts and actions, as well as clinical theory and practice. In this chapter, two such master narratives are explored and contrasted. The demonic narrative is based on an extreme split between good and evil, and the attribution of all suffering to conspiring wickedness, which is often hidden. The tragic narrative, which is presented as an antidote to the former, reads as a call for modesty in approaching human ability to control life in its vicissitudes. It emphasizes the nonpersonal and unintentional sources of suffering and advocates compassion toward sufferers rather than eradication of evil. The authors argue that the demonic and tragic are not essential attributes of psychological theories but are rather interpretive styles that infiltrate the work of therapy. The authors present the case of a male college student who shares psychodemonic and tragic narratives in therapy.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
