The viscosity of a suspension is influenced by several factors which include shape, size, size distribution, concentration, density and surface characteristics of the solids and viscosity of the suspending medium. Effects of particle concentration"'2'~ hape'~'~', ize'~*''size distribution and shear rate (') on the viscosity of suspensions have been reported. Surface charge gives rise to zeta potential in a suitable environment and has been to be of great consequence in determining the viscosity of suspensions. However, another important surface characteristic-interfacial tension-does not seem to have attracted much attention. This note presents the results of one such preliminary study" o'where the contact angle of the solid surfitce was varied by coating it with a water repellent silic+ one oil and the corresponding change in apparent viscosity was noted. Some of the other parameters were also studied.
