Grate-shaped minute periodic structures can be formed on various kinds of materials using linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses with low fluence that is slightly above the ablation threshold. Spacing of the structures is about the same as the laser wavelength. Performing overlapped scanning of the laser beam allows the formation of the periodic structures over an extended area. Scratch and pin-on-disk tests were performed to investigate the influence of the periodic structures on adhesiveness of diamondlike carbon (DLC) film to stainless steel, tool steel, and sintered tungsten carbide. We found that the periodic structures showed remarkable effect on improving adhesion between DLC film and its metal substrates.
