The biomedical research community has developed and used various rodent animal species and strains to identify and understand the biological mechanisms of disease, to assess the safety of food additives and drugs, and to evaluate the toxic and/or carcinogenic effects of chemicals. During the 1960s, a large-scale chemical testing program was developed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to screen potential cancer-causing substances (Bioassay Program). In 1981, the Bioassay Program was transferred to the newly established National Toxicology Program (NTP). Since that time, and with the establishment of Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Good Laboratory Practices Guidelines (GLP), standard protocols for conducting chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies have been refined.
