The isothermal compressibility (χ p) of CdTe (NaCl, B1 structure) is determined as χ 32kb= 2.77× 10− 3 kb− 1 and χ 100kb= 1.01× 10− 3 kb− 1 at room temperature by X-ray diffraction techniques at high pressure. At the transition of CdTe from the zincblende, B3, to B1 structure at 32 kb the lattice parameter of the B1 phase is a 0= 5.96±0.01 A ̊ and the molar volume, V M, is 31.9 cm 3/mole (ρ= 7.53 g/cm 3). Transition to the conducting phase (“white tin”, bct, A5 structure) is observed at 114±5 kb. Cell dimensions at 119 kb are a 0= 5.66±0.05 A ̊ c 0= 2.98±0.05 A ̊; V M= 28.7±0.9 cm 3/mole (ρ= 8.36 g/cm 3). The intermediate phase of the NbO type reported by Rooymans has not been verified.
