Actinomyces species rarely cause atypical pneumonia in the pediatric age group when open lung biopsy and surgical resection are needed for diagnosis and treatment. These microorganisms are a regular component of the polymicrobial flora in periodontal infections. These may then be responsible for systemic diseases, such as pulmonary actinomycosis, caused by aspiration of caseous dental material.’” Most cases occur in compromised children with dental caries, though it can also be observed occasionally in otherwise healthy children. The clinical picture of pulmonary actinomycosis has changed considerably in recent years ’ and it generally presents as a subacute illness with coughing, dyspnea, and chest pain. Radiological findings are those of unresolved pneumonia or of a pulmonary infiltrate suggesting tuberculosis or cancer. We report on a 3-year-old boy in whom the diagnosis was made by pathological examination of material obtained by bronchoscopy .
