Since vocabulary forms the building blocks of language, teachers and researchers alike have for decades sought ways to help learners increase their lexical capacity. However, in spite of a plethora of research, there appears no single panacea to aide L2 vocabulary acquisition. Rather, the ways in which vocabulary is learned seem to vary between individuals and their circumstances, which are consequently reflected in the distinct, theoretical frameworks explained in the literature. It is therefore best to view any advice that might be derived from examining such frameworks through the lens of one’s own unique teaching context and tailor it accordingly.Prior to unpacking any theoretical or pedagogical considerations, practitioners should be aware that discrepancies in values may lie between learners and teachers. Learners often feel that words are important, yet teachers may feel that words are easy to learn and may neglect them (Coady, 1997). Furthermore, other possible factors—such as vocabulary breadth—can prove to be major areas themselves within the field and remain contentious due to their complexity. Therefore, teachers initially need to establish a realistic and balanced perspective in order to best fulfil the needs of all parties involved. The present entry aims to equip teachers with the necessary tools to make informed decisions about the pedagogy they employ on behalf of their learners. Beginning with a brief overview of some of the key theoretical considerations and research findings, it then discusses how these may be applied on a practical level to help learners build their vocabulary base.
