The fundamental defect (or defects) that causes systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remains unknown. However, there is considerable evidence that multiple immunologic factors are in some way involved in the disease process. Whether any of the defects are primary or secondary to other factors (including immunologic ones) also remains largely unknown. Nevertheless, observations both in animals (1) and in humans (2) have indicated that genetic factors may control or affect immune abnormalities, including those found in SLE (3). In addition to genetic factors, there is now increasing evidence that neuroendocrine factors may also affect the immune system (4).As an outgrowth of these observations, the hypothesis has been raised that testosterone may slow the neuronal development in the left hemisphere, while simultaneously affecting immune development (5). Relevant to this idea are the observations that testosterone affects certain mice with lupus (6, 7) and that left-handedness is associated with immune disorders (5). This study, which was stimulated by these observations, was an investigation of whether SLE is also associated with left-handedness.
