This special series attempts to address some of the many issues associated with assistive technology (AT) by building upon the work of my friends and colleagues Kyle Higgins and Randy Boone, who earlier edited a special series on technology for this same journal (see JLD Volume 29, Nos. 1 and 2). Their outstanding work began what I hope will be a continuing focus on the efficacy of technology and, in particular, the continuation of research to validate the use of technology in schools, at work, in the home, and in recreation. Even though assistive technology has been in use for years, it is only recently that AT has been demonstrated to be particularly effective for persons with learning disabilities (LD; Bryant, 1996). Despite its availability, however, there remain numerous barriers to the timely acquisition and use of AT devices and services (Texas Assistive Technology Partnership, 1995). Barriers that have been consistently identified during public hearings include the following:
