Reducing the formation of oxide through the use of nitrogen gas shrouding improves the surface quality of aluminum extrusions. Past experience has shown that shrouding can permit increases in productivity. Nitrogen can also be used as a cooling medium in the extrusion process. By using computer-assisted extrusion and die-bearing temperature monitors, this investigation compares the relative effects of inert shrouding and die cooling on aluminum extrusion productivity. The study also examines these parameters in relation to selected solid and hollow sections and alloys 6061, 6063, 6105.
