The hydrolysates of fractions isolated from wool oxidized with peracetic acid were examined by paper chroma-tography. It is shown that the chromatograms are more complex than those of untreated wool. Thus, the fractions soluble and insoluble in ammonia solution contain lanthionine sulphone. However, this spot which is very weak, is of equal intensity in the 2 fractions and no evidence for the presence of any other cross-links in the insoluble fraction could be found. It is shown that, in addition to oxidizing all the cystine residues in wool, peracetic acid oxidized some of the lysine and arginine residues. Wool, when reacted with potassium cyanide solutions followed by peracetic acid, produces on hydrolysis lanthionine sulphone and cysteic acid. This shows that conversion of the cystine residues to lanthionine by cyanide solutions is not quantitative.
