Spatial and temporal distribution of shallow water sponges were studied on southeastern Brazilian rocky coasts by means of qualitative and quantitative samples made by SCUBA diving. Cluster analysis upon qualitative data showed heterogeneity of species composition at a regional scale (kilometres), and direct underwater observations showed heterogeneity at a local scale (few meters). Most species were stenotopic, but a few common species were eurytopic. Temporal variation was not significant (p = 0,05) for the five dominant species at the regional level, but it was significant for two species at the local level. Results are discussed on the light of problems and perspectives in biomonitoring strategies.
