Highlights from the article: The invention of the first asymmetric thin polymeric membrane by Sidney Loeb and Srivasa Sourirajan in the mid-1950s was the most important scientific breakthrough in membrane history because this membrane achieved significantly higher flux than that of previously-tested membranes, which were homogenous (or symmetric).
